BRS - Blade Root Scanner

The last stage blades (LSB) of the low pressure turbine (LP) are among the mechanically most loaded parts in steam turbines. In particular the blade roots, which are fixing the LS blades against the tremendous centrifugal forces encounter very high stresses. During regular inspections of these zones the blades are unmounted and then inspected for cracks in the blade root using magnetic particle inspection (MPI). The whole procedure of taking out blades, inspecting them and re-mounting them onto the rotor takes several days. Thus this is done only at large inspection campaigns. We developed a method able to inspect the blade roots in-situ, i.e. without the need to unmount them. This leads to tremendous time savings as an opening of the machine is not required.

How it works

Phased array UT inspection (PA) has proven to be able to detect cracks at the critical location in the different serrations of the blade root. The probes have to be guided both along the airfoil as well as on the platforms accurately to provide reliable results. A scanner system was developed to move the probes along these probe paths in a robust and reproducible way. As the space in the turbine is very limited, the scanner is easy to handle with minimum equipment required. Both scanning one blade after the other as well as switching to the next scan path is done efficiently and intuitively. To cover the large variety of different LS blade types, a modular system was developed that allows for quick design adaptations to a new blade or - even more – to reconfigure the scanner by just replacing very few parts.

For simplicity reasons the approach is a manual scanner with encoder feedback. More or less the only part to be exchanged or redesigned for a new blade type is the individually curved rail, which both fixes the scanner on the blade edges as well as guides the probe holders accurately along the required path. Easy to exchanges probe holders facilitate the execution of different scan configuration and the flexibility to expand the system for the future.
