At Gassco and Equinor, 2019 will be called a historic year; the year when robots are seriously used to carry out inspections at onshore oil and gas processing plants.
During the recent shutdown at Kårstø, the BIKE was sent into three pressure tanks to inspect the condition. Inside the tank, the robot can attach itself to the steel walls by means of magnetic wheels and can be guided up and down along vertical walls via cables up to 60 meters in length. In addition, the BIKE can climb over obstacles and make his way through lots of 90 degree internal and external transitions or corners.
The robot is equipped with a video camera and tools for ultrasound measurement of the thickness of the steel walls in the tank. It also has a bracket for mounting a boroscope; a tool that allows one to see effectively in nozzles in the tank.
