On both sides the GAP Scanner has an adjustable and extendable side guidance which allows access of gap widths from as low as 24mm up to 80mm.
Two strong magnets allow for scanner movement without pressing it onto the specimen. The scanner stays in position while the operator records & reviews the inspection data.
versatile & easy to use
With its modular design the scanner can be adapted to different gaps. Different probes and wedges can be mounted easily without the need for any tools.
For the inspection of shafts and rotors often UT or EC probes have to be guided accurately in narrow gaps between rotor disks, blade stages or other circumferential grooves. These gaps can vary significantly in geometry (depth and width) as well as in shape (continuous or interrupted).
How it works
A scissor mechanism is used to adjust the width of the scanner. Once the correct width is set up the operator mounts his Ultrasonic + coplant lines or Eddy Current probe. The setup and adjustment process takes less than five minutes.
For the reliable acquisition of inspection data as well for documentation purposes the data acquisition has to by position-correlated, i.e. encoded. Typically, the pattern is a linear scan 360° around the rotor.
To keep the device simple and fast to set-up a manual scanner is the right choice. I attaches magnetically to the rotor. The probe is mounted in the middle of the scanner underneath the handle. The internal spring loading and gimbals interface decouples the probe to avoid external forces from the operator and thus guarantee constant coupling conditions.
